About Nacarubi Itself

Nacarubi is an old African word used for banishing demons.  It is also the name of an old homestead ranch on the remote south coast of Big Sur.  After having heard stories of the legendary parties that went on up at Nacarubi back in the 70’s and 80’s, we, along with many others are excited to rebuild the amazing original redwood slab stage, and bring on the good times once more.  Many many thanks and respect to our hosts, the Withrow family for working with us on this project and having us on their land.

Mission Statement

We feel that sharing music and good times with friends is crucial.  We want to use this festival as a way to have fun and blow off some steam while also taking steps to help our local schools.  This party is by the people for the people of Big Sur & the peninsula, and our friends beyond from all over the place. We are in support of the spirit that made Big Sur wild and wonderful in the 1st place, not the forces that exploit it.  Furthermore, this may give us an opportunity to tell some great stories to our kids, rather than retelling legends of the ‘good old days’ forever.

Food & Drinks

Bring your own food, drinks, whatever you like.  There will also be some great food and drink vendors on site, so if you don’t feel like cooking or concocting for your self, you’ll have options.  We’ll provide a large public BBQ grill and a place to wash dishes, along with some picnic tables, and drinking water, but you gotta bring your own water bottles.  Also, we ask that you take all your own trash and recycling back with you please.  THERE ARE NO ATMS ON SITE, so get cash before you enter Big Sur.

Camping

You’ll be camping in a grassy meadow.  This ain’t no KOA campground—just you and your tent on the earth.  And you may end up camping about a 5 minute walk from your car.  Be sure to check the packing list below.  NO DOGS ALLOWED AT THIS PARTY FOR THE SAFETY OF THE KIDS. Thanks.

Info for Families with Kids

What do we mean by kid and family friendly? This festival is a gathering for people of all ages. Every family has their own concept of what a kid and family friendly environment actually entails. So as to not mislead anyone, here are the details so you can decide for yourselves if this event is appropriate for bringing your family and kids.

There will be a designated family campground in a beautiful meadow about 200 yards away from the main party area. Although you will probably be able to hear the music from a distance throughout the night, it will be far enough away to relax and sleep at any time of day or night. There will also be a variety of fun activities beyond listening to music and dancing available throughout the weekend...for more details on these activities please check out the activities page.

Fire Safety

Fire safety is a huge issue!!  We can’t stress this point enough.  All it takes is one careless move. We need your help and responsibility when it comes to fire safety. No open fires. Only smoke near an ash tray.  Don’t be a fool!!! Thank you.

Emergency Info

We do not assume responsibility for anyone’s safety.  If you come, come at your own risk.  It is a remote location.  The only possible emergency evacuation is via calling a medi-vac helicopter.  We recommend  bringing a first-aid kit, but certainly bring your common sense.

Cell Phones Internet

There is no cell phone or internet reception at Nacarubi.  There is a landline for emergency use only.

Road Conditions/Carpooling

The road to Nacarubi turns into a dirt road for the last 20 minutes or so.  Some passages of the road are only 1 lane and have steep drop offs to one side.  Although we encourage the use of a 4 wheel drive vehicle, it is completely possible to drive to Nacarubi in any regular car if you drive carefully.  Please be very careful either way, and of course carpool if you can.  Also we highly suggest you try to make it out before sundown. That way you can enjoy the views, and set up your camp in the daylight.

Festival Times

Gates open Friday June 25th at noon and close on Sunday June 27th at 1pm.  The idea here is to spend a couple nights all together.  Take the day off on friday so you can make it out before sundown.  Really it would be ideal to pack on thursday so you can just have a nice relaxed cruise up to the nac on friday day.

Climate

The weather is usually very hot in June, but sometimes the fog rolls up from the ocean and cools things down.  We suggest you bring enough clothes to ensure your comfort in a variety of weather.  There will be some bugs out there at this time of year...we suggest bringing bug repellant and mosquito nets just in case.

Showers and Bathrooms

We’ll have a private ghetto-fabulous cold shower rig for washing off during the hot daytime, as well as a plenty of porto pottie-esque outhouses.  Bringing your own TP is a good idea.

Being very far from civilization means…

The closest real town with all amenities is either San Louis Obispo (2 hrs south of nacarubi), or Carmel (2.5 hrs north of nacarubi). For this reason it is very very important that you make sure you have enough gas, cash, and other supplies you need before you enter Big Sur. There are a few small gas stations and ATMs along the way in Gorda, Lucia or Big Sur proper as well, but they close early and are expensive.
